5 Ways to Make Your Yard More Dog-Friendly

August 15, 2019

Do you have a yard for your canine buddy to run and play in? If so, that’s great! Fido loves being able to enjoy some fresh air and sunlight while chasing squirrels around. However, your cute pet may get bored outdoors if he has nothing to do but stare at the fence. Read on as a Los Gatos, CA vet offers a few helpful tips on making your yard more dog-friendly.

One of the best ways to get Fido’s cute tail going is by getting him a doghouse. Usually, when we discuss pet habitats, we always say that bigger is better. Doghouses are an exception, however. Fido will feel safer and more comfortable if his doghouse feels like a cozy little den. Although he should have room to sit up and lay down comfortably, you don’t want the doghouse to be too big. Also, choose one with good insulation.

Puppy Play Zone

Dogs are super cute when they are being playful. Offer Fido some fun outdoor toys to play with. Flirt poles, tug toys, and squeaky footballs are all good options. Change these out regularly, so your four-legged buddy always has something new and fun to play with.

Remove Toxic Plants

Man’s Best Friend has a very healthy appetite, and will eat just about anything. Make sure your yard is free of toxic plants. Sago palms are one of the most problematic ones: they are very popular, but are extremely toxic to pets. You’ll also want to remove foxtail grasses, oleanders, and other unsafe options. The ASPCA website has a full list of toxic and non-toxic plants here.

Kiddie Pool

Even dogs that aren’t very good swimmers often enjoy splashing around in water on hot days. Get Fido a kiddie pool to play in. You can also give your canine companion a pet fountain, or just let him play in the spray from a hose or sprinkler. This may be just as entertaining for you as it is for your furry pal!

Many of our canine friends instinctively like to bury toys and treats, to save them for later. If you have a furry, four-legged pirate for a pet, get your pooch a sandbox!
