Keeping Your Cat Happy and Healthy

September 15, 2017

September is officially Happy, Healthy Cat Month! (Of course, for those of us in the veterinary industry, every month is Happy, Healthy Cat Month.) While giving Fluffy food, a clean litterbox, and lots of ear scritches may cover her basic needs, good cat care goes far beyond that. Read on as a Los Gatos, CA vet discusses keeping cats happy and healthy.

Good Food

Proper nutrition is a cornerstone of good pet care. Give Fluffy a premium, quality kitty food, but be careful not to overfeed her. This could cause her to become obese, which is very bad for cats’ health! Ask your vet for recommendations.

We know, kitties spend a rather excessive amount of time snoozing, but Fluffy will still need to be entertained when she is actually awake. Provide your drowsy pet with lots of kitty toys, and take time to play with her daily. This will help keep her active, fight off kitty boredom, and offer her beneficial mental stimulation.

Kitty Furniture

Cats don’t mind using our things, but they will really benefit from having some pieces they don’t have to share with their human servants. Cat towers are great, because they serve as scratching posts, napping spots, and jungle gyms. Plus, they also give Fluffy a good view of her kingdom!

Make sure to keep Fluffy’s powder room nice and clean! If you have more than one furball, you’ll need one litterbox per kitty, plus at least one extra.

Veterinary Care

While Fluffy would probably rather take a nap than come visit us, proper veterinary care is crucial to her health. We recommend that all kitties be microchipped, spayed or neutered, and kept current on their parasite control products, exams, and vaccinations. Between appointments, watch for any potential signs of illness, and contact your vet immediately if you notice anything amiss.

While kitties love going outside, they are both safer and healthier living indoors. Keep Fluffy safe and sound inside!

Purrs and Snuggles

Although Fluffy may sometimes look at you with a superior, judgmental look, at the end of the day, cats are actually quite affectionate little furballs, and they need to feel loved to really be happy. Pay attention to your kitty every day!
