Do you have a pet rabbit? Bunnies make extremely cute and lovable little pets. Floppy has been charming people for centuries with her adorable furry face and playful antics. Rabbits do have some very specific care needs, however. A proper diet, which includes plenty of grass hay, is of course very important. But what else does Floppy need? Read on for some great bunny care tips from a San Jose, CA vet.
Choose a cage that is large enough for Floppy to hop around, stand up, stretch out, and play without tripping over her things. Pick a cage with a solid bottom, as wire floors can be dangerous to rabbits. You’ll need to add a safe, suitable substrate, such as aspen. Avoid pine and cedar substrates, which aren’t safe for bunnies. Be sure to include proper accessories, such as a hide box, dishes, a water bottle, and, if you like, a litterbox and hayrack.
Bunnies are very playful and curious. They also need to chew quite a bit to keep their teeth healthy. Put these two things together, and you have an adorable pet that will nibble on just about anything. Therefore, you’ll need to do some bunnyproofing. Remove, secure, or protect toxic plants; wires and cords; chemicals; medications; furniture legs; baseboards; small items; and personal items, like shoes. Ask your vet for specific instructions.
Offer your furball lots of fun toys to play with. You can make some great bunny toys out of household items, like the cardboard tubes from toilet-paper rolls. Just be sure not to offer Floppy anything with sharp edges, small parts, or dangling threads. Items covered in paint, glitter, or varnish are also a no-no.
Proper veterinary care is very important! Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule. In between visits, watch for signs of illness, such as lethargy, unkempt fur, and a reduced appetite. Contact your vet immediately if you notice anything wrong.
Bunnies need to feel loved to really thrive. Pay lots of attention to Floppy! Play with her, pet her, and offer her toys and treats. You may be rewarded with a bunny binkie, which is basically a rabbit happy dance. Needless to say, binkies are absolutely adorable!
